Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Camera Reviews Roundup

DigitalReview - Feb 22 2011
"We were pleased with the performance of the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS in our tests. The camera powers up responsively, and the comfortably positioned zoom lever next to the shutter button makes framing images a simple step. Buttons and controls are well layed out and are easy to operate. The 4x image stabilized zoom lens incorporated into the Canon SD1..." More »

"In terms of low light shooting, when switching off the built-in flash and utilising available light we were pleasantly surprised by the camera's performance over and above ISO400, with noise not really creeping in until ISO800 and then only very subtly. At ISO1600 we are beginning to lose definition across the image, but unlike on even cheaper compacts, the..." More »

"Even if the Ixus 130 was expensive, we'd still like it. For every person who wants to be able to control every facet of taking a picture, there are hundreds who simply want something that will capture a moment without asking all kinds of complicated questions. The Ixus 130 is exactly that camera. We liked: The headline has to be the price - if you opt f..." More »

"The Canon SD1400 is one of the most attractive ELPHs Canon has designed. The slim design with rounded corners is also pretty smart; and what's also smart is the enhanced Smart Auto mode that can set the camera 22 different ways so you don't have to fiddle. If you want to fiddle, Program mode gives you access to everything but the aperture and shutter s..." "Our biggest complaint with the earlier IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS was its unremarkable 3x zoom range which lacked true wide-angle capabilities. That's now been addressed with a broader 4x range on the IXUS 130 / SD1400 IS which includes 28mm coverage. Annoyingly you still can't optically zoom while filming video, but the range is much more flexible for normal p..." More »

CNET - Apr 01 2010
"The 130 is a truly beautiful little camera, but it does have flaws. No-one would expect professional image quality from a tiny camera, but the 130's 14.1-megapixel sensor might lead you to expect pictures that are better than average. You won't get them, however. The 1/2.3-inch sensors used in today's compact cameras are just too small to deliver reall..." More »

"The Canon Digital IXUS 130 continues the long-standing IXUS tradition of small, stylish and well-built cameras, with the added benefit of being the slimmest model to date. The high price and merely average image quality do take some of the sheen off what is otherwise a very nice point-and-shoot. With its well-constructed metal body, slim profile and cl..." More »

Digital Camera Review - Mar 19 2010
"The image quality of Canon's small cameras is consistently good, and the SD1400 is no exception. Colors are strong, but realistic. The images are sharp, thanks to the high quality lens. Overexposure sometimes affected the photos because the SD1400 IS's (1/2.3 inch type) small sensor has a limited dynamic range. However, Canon's i-Contrast feature helps to c..." More »

"Like the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS, we were given Fisheye, Miniature, Low Light, and plenty of other shooting presets to warm the hearts of camerphobes and beginners near and far. However, the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS offered Exposure, White Balance, ISO, and we could alter the shutter speed up to 15 seconds in "Long Shutter" mode. Face Detection..." More »

These camera are a charm. Even I got it uses they are still work very well. They are portable small with pretty good resolution. I got it for $50 and it is almost like new compare to like it new value of ~300 ish. That is a bargain. I tend to drop camera, so it won't hurt me as much. These still work when dropped. This is my 2nd one for this line because after multiple hard drop from pervious. the previous one I bought was badly used with indent, it looks like it has been run over by a car, but hey it works until I dropped couple more time- there came the lens errors and won't work. Previous one last me for a year, but this one will probably last me much longer because I bought it used but this seller sold me very good one with its original bag and mint condition. I am lucky for this 2nd time around.
Only con is that it has hard time stand by itself, so be very careful when do the self mode. Get the pot to hold it. Can't zoom in much.
Pro is very small and easily carry around. Good enough pixel to do photoshop and crop. Better than my other cannon higher end for pixel wise and 15x zoom.
Either way I am fond of Cannon over other high end brand.

buyer Beware one speck of dirt and your camera is toast, Roux Laflame
the pop out lens is so fragile just handling it can stop it from working and one speck of dirt will close the lens permanently. It costs more to fix then replace. All these pop out lens models are useless so expect it to last only a few onths like mine did before having to replace it.

This is one of my favorite cameras I have ever owned. The last three camera's I have bought have been this same model. It takes great pictures and I think is the smallest camera made by cannon. It is slimmer than any of the ones currently available, and for someone whom travels a lot retaining good picture quality while being smaller than others is better. The problems that I have had with this camera are due to being kind of hard on them because I use it for work in adverse conditions and travel a lot. I had my first one for three years with no problems until I dropped it face down into the sand and then the lens started malfunctioning. My second and third ones were dropped on cobblestone and concrete while the lens was extended and had the same lens malfunction issues. They all survived being dropped on their sides while turned off and stuffed into pockets of jackets and backpacks but because the lens housing extends out, I had some problems. I am hard on my equipment sometimes, these sorts of things probably wouldn't be an issue for most folks. After my third Cannon SD1400IS broke while on the job, I found the Panasonic Lumix that offers comparable size, weight, picture quality, MP, and is waterproof, freeze-proof, drop-proof, and me-proof (so far) that is my new go to that I have had for almost a year now.

I had one of these before and loved it for its great pictures and handy slim size. My old one got damaged by a rock when it was in my back pocket, so had to get another. I tried a different, bulkier one with bigger lens, but the lens stopped opening.

Bought this a few years ago and have taken many pictures. Family, Close ups, Fishing trips, Ball games, landscapes and work photos of machined parts and photos to communicate issues with quality. Almost as good as a professional. Very Happy with this purchase. Battery life is great. Quick to recharge flash. Only down side is using it in wet or very cold weather.

    not that great, Mr. A

I found good reviews about it and bought it
But found its not that great
    reason I did not like
    - auto focus is not quick to focus
    - you really need stable hands else it does not give sharp image
^ i have found this to be a huge problem

This replaces an old Olympus 2 MP digital camera and obviously does a much better job while being a fraction of the size.

Had to replace it- it broke twice in the same fashion, genissimo "giovanna"
The camera itself is great- easy to use, slick and small, takes great photos.
Luckily I bought the 1 year warranty, because within a few months, the camera would not turn on, saying the battery was dead even though it was not. I bought new batteries, and a new charger, but that didn't fix anything. Sometimes it would turn on and take a few pictures, but then would unexpectedly shut down and not turn on again for several days. This was highly disappointing because I bought the camera a couple months before a big trip to Europe, and could not use it on my trip.
So I took it in to Geek Squad at the Best Buy I purchased it at, and they replaced it with a new one, since they were unable to fix it. I bought the 1 year warranty again. Unfortunately, the exact same malfunction occurred just OVER a year after that. Either I was unlucky enough to get two duds in a row, or I live in some type of magnetic vortex that destroys Canon PowerShots. :(

Horribly inconsistent quality and very poor low light, pen name
I have owned many cameras and this is by far the worst. After using it for an entire year, this is my experience. The focus and quality of pictures is horribly inconsistent. I take every picture at least 3-4 times in hopes of getting the correct lighting, flash, and focus in auto mode. Sorry I paid so much money for a product that gave me no satisfaction.

    Verified Purchase(
I had this camera for almost 4 years, took more thank 45000 pictures without any problem in more than 10 countries. Very portable, fits in your jeans and is ready whenever you need it. The quality of the pictures is amazing, I have made enlargements up to 36" x 48" and they look great. 7 months ago it was damaged pretty badly after it felt (with the lens out) from a 3rd floor .... I decided to buy a Nikon to replace this camera (Nikon Coolpix S3500) and I was very disappointed at both the quality of the pictures and the whole system in general...(the lens didn't shut off after 1 month). I gave away the Nikon and decided to buy the Canon Powershot SD 1400 AGAIN one month ago...it was used but it hasn't give me any problem....I will buy again in a hearbeat if I have to, and even if it is a second hand camera...it is the best!
