On October 24 2012, Nikon announced the 14.2 Megapxiels Nikon 1 V2, the latest 1 Series mirrorless system camera featuring a new 14.2 Megapixels CX-format CMOS sensor, new EXPEED 3A image processing engine, improved ergonomics, built-in flash and command mode dial function. The V2 hybrid AF system comes with a 1.4-million-dot electronic viewfinder, a 3.0-inch 921,000-dot LCD display and ISO 160-6400. The V2 provides high-speed continuous shooting with continuous Auto focusing a 15 fps up to 45 frames, or 60 fps for up to 40 frames. There is a Best Moment Capture Mode and the new Live Image Control that lets a user preview their creative vision, pre-capture.

The V2 comes with an enhanced design that includes a comfortable traditional grip as well as a textured camera body and mode dials. The top-placed Command Dial allow users to make camera adjustments quickly, while the new Direct Setting Control enables quick access to settings in manual exposure modes (P,S,A,M). The V2 includes an Advance Movie Mode capable of shooting 1080p Full HD video and high-resolution stills of the same subject or scene. Slow motion movies at both 400 fps and 1200 fps can also be captured, plus full manual exposure controls are accessible while in Advance Movie Mode. There is also a new optional SB-N7 i-TTL compact speedlight for Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 V2 hot shoe. The flash head tilts up to 120 degrees and provides guide number of 18 meters/59 feet at ISO 100. The SB-N7 is powered by AAA batteries and listed for $159.95. The V2 is listed for $899.95 with the 10-30mm VR kit lens. Here's the summary of review by ePhotoZine, giving the camera a rating of 4.5 out of 5:

"Images have excellent colours and are well exposed. Portrait shots have pleasant skin tones while they are free of red-eye. The V2 is capable of shooting at fast shutter speeds to capture fast moving objects such as the water flowing from the fountain above. Images have good detail at both ends of the lens, although a little soft in the corners. There is a good control over purple fringing, with a slight amount appearing in contrasting areas of the image. The 10-30mm lens has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm which makes it hard to get close to your subject for macro shots. The lowest ISO setting is 160 which produced a noise free image, with only very slight increases in noise when moving up to 200, 400 and 800. At ISO 1600 images are a little soft, with detail lost in places at ISO 3200. This worsens at ISO 6400 with images looking blurred in contrasting areas. Under our studio lights the AWB setting copes excellently. The incandescent preset takes a very similar picture as the AWB setting under the incandescent lights, with the fluorescent preset having a strong magenta cast when shooting under the fluorescent lights.

The Nikon 1 V2 is an excellent advancement in the mirrorless camera market. There are stunning new features such as Slow View and there is fast high-speed shooting. Given you can shoot at shutter speeds up to 1/4000, it's possible to use the camera for sports photography if you purchase the 10-100mm (35mm equiv: 27-270mm) lens or attach a AF-S or AF-I Nikkor lens using the FT1 mount. Of course, the V2 is also great for many other types of photography and it doesn't require you to carry a bag to keep it in. If you've got big pockets, they'll easily fit it, especially as the 10-30mm compacts down when not in use. The price is a little high at the moment, but once it drops it's going to be a very popular camera."

Nikon V2 Mirrorless Camera Reviews Roundup

PhotographyLife - Nov 24 2013
"While not at the highest, professional quality standards, the Nikon 1 V2 with system lenses can produce very good quality images, especially if the aperture is kept at f/5.6 or under. I have found that some of the Nikon 1 lenses such as the 18.5mm f/1.8, 30-110mm and 6.7-13mm are particularly good, producing consistently sharp images with nice contrast, and..." More »

"As with the V1, test shots after dark had to be taken in the manual exposure mode, with manual focusing and between +0.7 and +1.3EV of exposure compensation the overcome the tendency of the metering system to under-expose in low light levels. When both focus and metering were spot-on, shots from the review camera were as sharp as those from the V1. Imatest..." More »

"The Nikon 1 V2 is an impressive mirrorless camera that delivers a unique performance compromise. Image quality is good, considerably better than the majority of compact cameras, while not matching that of state-of-the-art mirrorless models. In terms of speed though, which is a big concern with mirrorless cameras, it truly excels. This digital camera shows v..." More »

"You've got to hand it to Nikon. Like several other review outlets, we were critical of the physical design of the J1 and V1 when they debuted. These were slippery, troublesome cameras, and in certain conditions that can really rob the shooting experience of its charm. But take one look at the Nikon 1 V2, and you'll see the company has attacked this problem..." More »
