According to the year-end summary of BCN analysis of DSLR sales trend in Japan for the most popular DSLR cameras in year 2009, the Canon EOS Kiss X3 (aka Rebel T1i or 500D) is at the #1 position with 15.9% overall sales share. The lowest price for the Canon Rebel T1i camera is around $579. The older model Canon EOS Kiss X2 (aka Rebel XSi or 450D) is at #2 position with 13.2% sales share in 2009.

The third ranking is the Nikon D90, with a total of 9.1% sales share in 2009. The fourth, fifth and sixth ranking are the other three entry-level Nikon DSLRs, namely the D5000, D60 and D40, with a combined total of 17.1% sales share. The newly announced entry-level D3000 is at #14. The lowest price for the D90 is around $699. If you combined the sales share of all the entry/mid-level DSLRs from Nikon among the top 20 (i.e. D5000, D3000, D90, D60 & D40), the total is 28%, which is very close to the Canon combined sales share at 30.7% (i.e. EOS Kiss X3, X2 and F).

The Olympus E-P1 compact Micro Four Third DSLR camera is at #9 ranking with a sales share of 3%. The 10th ranking with 2.7% sales share in 2009 is the Panasonic DMC-GF1 which is targeting the same market as the Olympus E-P1. Both cameras are similar in terms of both size and weight. While Panasonic use slightly different Panasonic N-MOS image sensors, both have a 4:3 aspect ratio and offer effective resolutions of around 12 Megapixels. Both cameras comes with 3.0-inch LCD while the GF1 has double the resolution at 460,000 dots. Although not as dramatic as the launch of Olympus E-P1 which went up to #2 sales ranking, the DMC-GF1 camera is doing good in September with a #6 position in the sales ranking and went up to #3 in October.

The total sales share of all Canon DLSRs combined within the top 20 is 37.9% and #2 Nikon has a total sales share of 28% in 2009. Panasonic is third with 8.5% sales share. Thanks to the popularity of the Olympus E-P1 & Pentax K-x camera model, both Olympus & Pentax are fourth with 4.3% sales share. Sony is last with only 4% sales share in 2009.
