On January 7 2010, Sony announced the Cyber-shot TX7 which is a new touch-screen camera with a 10.1-megapixel EXMOR R CMOS sensor, a Carl Zeiss branded 25-100mm equivalent zoom lens and image stabilisation. The generously-sized wide 8.9cm (3.5-inch) touch-screen LCD and streamlined user interface makes operation simple and easy. TruBlack screen technology minimises reflections and boosts contrast for a richly detailed view of your shots, even when you're outdoors in bright daylight, the manufacturer says.

Apart from capturing ten-megapixel photos, the Sony TX7 can also shoot 1080i full-HD videos. In the new Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode, the camera detects if people or other objects are moving in your field of view as you sweep the camera and compensates for any mis-matching as images are automatically stitched together. The lightweight (133g) Sony TX7 has 45MB of internal memory and slots for both Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD/SDHC cards. The TX7 camera is available in silver, blue and red for about $400. Here is the summary of a recent review by DigitalCameraInfo, giving the camera a rating of 819.77:

"Sony made some interesting choices with the Cyber-shot DSC-TX7. Rather than offering more megapixels, this compact camera offers a longer feature list. While other point & shoots are upping the megapixel count to 12 and 14, the TX7 actually takes a step back to 10 megapixels, and it is a better camera for that. We found that it shot good looking images, with low noise and a good amount of detail. And the back illuminated Exmor R sensor allows it to offer a lot of interesting features that were previously only available on larger models like the Cyber-shot DSC-HX1, including a very effective anti-shake stabilization mode and a very good panorama mode that shoots panoramas with a single press of the shutter.

Although the LCD screen that takes up most of the back of the TX7 is very bright and sharp, the touch screen is less than perfect. When using your fingers, it misses some touches and you can sometimes end up pressing the wrong button. The included stylus (Sony calls it a Paint Pen as it is designed for use with the included painting application) makes things a little easier, but it is annoying that you have to use this to get the best results. Of course, these features come at a price: at around $390, the TX7 is an expensive compact camera. It is also lacking the manual control features of its larger sibling the HX1. But it is small, easy to handle, has a great screen and shoots good looking images. The new features it offers are mostly genuinely useful, so it would be a great pick if you can afford the slightly high sticker price."

Sony DSC-TX7 Camera Reviews Roundup

ImagingResource: "Though the Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 oversaturates strong red and blue tones (as many consumer digital cameras are wont to do to appeal to consumers' taste for very vivid color), it keeps the bright yellows and greens well in check. Pink and purple tones are also fairly accurate. There are a couple of noticeable hue shifts, however, such as cyan toward blue and orange toward yellow. Darker skin tones are warmer and more ye..." - Jun 19 2010 More »

DigitalCameraReview: "I found images from the TX7 to be consistently good, if a bit soft, with just occasional blurriness in the corners and no vignetting (darkening at the corners). The TX7 produces excellent AVCHD video, especially if you have the equipment to view the 1080i HD videos properly. The stereo sound is very good, and the sounds of quacking ducks and rushing water came through very well in my test videos. At this t..." - May 07 2010 More »
Pocket-lint: "Close inspection of images reveals slight edge softness to wider view images and these are also affected by some barrel distortion and chromatic aberration, typical of this sort of compact if not at this price point. However, colour is well rendered and that's good as there's no way to adjust colour settings, which is quite unusual in such compacts. Nevertheless, white balance control is good, though control of imag..." - Apr 13 2010 More »
CameraLabs: "The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 is a slim compact with a large touch-screen display and a number of unique features. The optical zoom may have an average 4x total range, but starts at a very useful and very wide 25mm equivalent, and can also be adjusted while you film videos. Speaking of movies, the TX7 also boasts nothing less than Full HD 1080i capabilities, when most rivals are still satisfied with 720p. In term..." - Apr 04 2010 More »
Robin Chung: "New in the Sony CyberShot TX7 is the HDR mode. Ideal for high contrast shots when part of the picture is shadowed. I made two photos of a high contrast situation. One with HDR mode on and one using P mode with ISO 200. This really makes a spectacular difference. Without HDR every indoor details are blacked out. The details on the buddha statue are impossible to see. But with HDR enabled everything becomes clear..." - Feb 10 2010 More »

Quality should be better, Hani A. Al Harbi - Jul 06 2010
HI Cons: 1) The slider which comes down to take pictures is slippery and lacks grip - Sony should have created a ridge to assist in the sliding motion (2) It's very easy to get your finger in the picture - so if you are accustomed to holding your camera with both hands, watch out for your finger in pictures (lens placement is not optimal) (3) The manual which comes with the ca...

Amazing photos, great video, fun to use, Mark K. Eyer - Jul 01 2010
I am just back from two weeks in southern France with my new DSC-TX7. I love this camera. I took about a thousand photos and about an hour of video, and it all fit comfortably within the amount of available memory in the camera. I especially like the convenience of this unit. I carried it in the pocket of my jeans the whole trip. I could pop it out, turn it on, and take a shot on very...

I like it more every time I use it!, B. Lee - Jun 29 2010
I was really hoping this camera lived up to it's reviews. It did, and more. I knew the battery wouldn't be the most robust, I can live with that. The features on this little gem is what really impresses me every time I use it. I'm not sure which is my favorite aspect of the TX7. You've probably already read about the excellent low light capabilities, I can also attest to this....
