Canon PowerShot SD780 IS (aka IXUS 100 IS) Review by CNET With Rating 3.5/5
2009-06-20 07:33 | Source
Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS (aka Canon PowerShot SD780 IS) is the slimmest ever Canon compact camera, measuring a mere 18.4mm thick. This 12 megapixel model has a stylish ultra-slim metal body, 3x zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilizer , 2.5 inch LCD screen with optical viewfinder, and new Smart AUTO mode. Face Detection, Blink Detection plus Face Self-Timer and Auto Red-Eye Correction. It also features a 720p HD Movie Mode with a built-in HDMI connector for playback on HD widescreen TVs. CNET gave this camera a rating of 3.5 out of 5 with the following conclusion:"Photo quality is very good, but still subject to problems characteristic of point-and-shoot cameras of this size and price. Some smudginess from noise reduction starts appearing at ISO 200, but all photos were generally soft. Subjects get noticeably softer and smoother as the ISO gets higher, but detail remains reasonably good up to and including ISO 800. While large prints may be out of the question, the noise is suppressed well enough to make small prints and Web use a possibility. (Click to see a photo comparison of ISOs.) In general exposure, white balance, contrast, and color were very good. However, highlights are prone to clipping. Also, chromatic aberration (purple fringing) is in good supply in high-contrast shots, though it's only really visible when photos are viewed at full resolution, not at smaller sizes.
I may have mentioned this once or twice in this review, but the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is very small. So little and lightweight, in fact, that there's a good chance you'll forget you have it on you--making it just as easily misplaced, too. Yet, even for my large hands it is relatively comfortable to use. While it would be great if it was just a little bit faster, the SD780 IS is overall a great pocket camera. And with its HD-video-capture abilities, the SD780 is strong competition for pocket HD camcorders. "

| Trusted Reviews: "The autofocus system also appears to be the same as the IXUS 110 and 990, with a choice of either face-detection and tracking in AiAF mode, or simple centre-point AF with two zone sizes. The AF is nice and quick, but I've seen quicker, including the Casio EX-S12. As usual the AiAF system works very well, apart from occasionally when it decides to focus on some random element in the background of a scene rather than..." - Nov 11 2009 More » | |
| MacWorld: "In our lab's jury evaluations, the 12-megapixel SD780 IS netted an overall image quality score of Very Good, earning some of the highest marks we've seen for a point-and-shoot this year for its lack of distortion, its color accuracy, and its image sharpness. In hands-on informal tests, I was amazed at the color accuracy and lack of noise in low-light shots at high ISO levels. The manual ISO settings (ranging from IS..." - Aug 11 2009 More » | |
| Imaging Resource: "I hand-picked the Canon SD780 IS from the range of Spring 2009 digital cameras, hoping it would be a good performer, as I expect its appearance alone to make it a great seller. We've even see other sites give it a positive review. Though we really like the way the camera works, and at least two of us had it on our short list as our next pocket camera, the fact that it can't exceed the capabilities of the two-year-ol..." - Jun 22 2009 More » | |
| DPInterface: "The Canon PowerShot SD780 Digital ELPH produces good image quality below ISO 800, with nicely saturated colors, low color fringing and distortion and no redeye (thanks to the redeye removal tool available in both shooting and playback modes). If you don't mind making small 4 x 6 prints, then you could use the camera's ISO 3200 mode, which lowers resolution to 2 MP but quality is comparable to native 2 megapixel..." - May 31 2009 More » |

This is a great camera for carrying in your pocket to catch all those "special moments" and great photo ops. This little camera takes great pictures and is easy to use. Broken Camera- No Help from Pemstar, Tabitha Salomon - Apr 16 2013
I purchased a refurbished Canon camera from Pemstar that I was hoping to take on my international trip to see the new world wonder Chichen Itza. When I got to Mexico, the camera turned on, but immediately froze and would not turn off. I rebooted the camera, but just froze again and completely shutdown. I had to use my phone to take picture of this once in a lifetime trip...
Great little camera, kll8 - Apr 14 2013
I've had this camera over 3 years now and it's still everything I could have hoped for. I consider myself an amateur and mainly use it for taking pictures/video of my son, family vacations, that sort of thing. I love the small size and ease of use (even my 4 year old can take decent pictures with it). I keep it in Case Logic TBC-302 FFP Compact Camera Case (Black) when...
