After the announcement of the full-frame Nikon D600 DSLR, Canon finally announces a full-frame DSLR camera with a similar price-point, the EOS 6D. The 20.2 Megapixels CMOS sensor 6D features a DIGIC 5+ processor (same as 5D Mark III), 3-inch 1.04-million dot LCD screen, 4.5 fps continuous shooting (slightly lower than 5D Market III's 6 fps), 63 metering zones, auto-focus as low as EV -3, ISO range of 100 to a high of 25600 (extended to ISO 50 and 102,400), a UHS-1 SD card slot, and built-in WiFi and GPS functionality. The camera no longer accepts CompactFlash card slots.
About GPS, the 6D geotags every photo taken on the camera, includes a Coordinated Universal Time stamp, and lets users see a photo map that shows an exact route between all your shots. While Canon has offered Wi-Fi and GPS accessories before, having these features built-in should offer a much simpler experience. The 6D comes with a major upgrade to the autofocus system. While its 11 autofocus points and single cross-type sensor are far fewer than what's in the 5D Mark III, the 6D autofocus sensor is the most sensitive sensor in low light the company has ever built. Borrowing from the 5D-series, the 6D provides full manual control over exposure and audio levels while recording video. The camera features NTSC and PAL video modes at multiple frame rates, recording 1080p at 30 (29.97), 24 (23.976) and 25 fps, 720p at 60 (59.94) and 50 fps and standard video at 30 (29.97) and 25 fps. The camera provides up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds of continuous recording (with 4GB automatic file partitioning) in selectable All i-frame or IPB compressions with embedded timecode. The EOS 6D Digital SLR Camera will be sold in a body-only configuration for $2,099.00 and it will additionally be offered in a kit version with Canon's EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens for $2,899.00. "The overall theme of this year's Photokina seems to be the proliferation of full-frame cameras, particularly on the low end. With the announcement of the Sony A99, RX1, the Nikon D600, and now the Canon EOS 6D, there's no shortage of models that provide full-frame capability at a more reasonable sub-$3,000 price. There are tradeoffs, of course, or else every full-frame body would cost just north of $2000. While the EOS 6D does provide a 20.2-megapixel full-frame sensor, its body doesn't have the same premium feel that the professionally geared 5D Mark III or 1D X provide. That said, we enjoyed shooting with the camera, which has a quite responsive autofocus system, snappy shot-to-shot time, and a level of control that is comprehensive while still remaining approachable for novice shooters.
In general, it's hard to find fault with the premise of a camera that promises full-frame quality and a high level of control at a reasonable price. We're very eager to get the 6D into our labs for a full performance breakdown, but until then consider us impressed at what Canon has managed to fit into the 6D's diminutive design."
