On August 26 2010, Canon announced the 2008-model 50D replacement - the New EOS 60D DSLR Camera. The 60D comes with 18 Megapixels APS-C sized CMOS image sensor, 3-inch Vari-Angle Clear View LCD screen, Full HD Video video recording with manual overrides including audio level control, and in-camera functionality for RAW image processing plus Creative Filters to manipulate images.

The EOS 60D has an expanded standard ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 6,400 equivalents, while retaining the same expanded upper limit of ISO 12,800 from the EOS 50D. Burst shooting speed has falled to 5.3 fps (frames per second), but buffer depth remains basically unchanged at 16 Raw / 58 JPEG images. The 60D borrows many features from 7D. For example, the 7D's movie recording modes have been carried over to the 60D. The 60D can record 1080p HD at 24, 30 and 25 fps. It can also record at reduced resolutions such as 720p and 640x480 with 50 and 60 fps. It has a digital level to correct for pitch similar to the 7D. The 50D also has a 64-level audio gain control as in the 5D Mark II's updated firmware.

The Canon EOS 60D body now has more rubber coating for improved grip, locking mode dial, and a new multi control dial in place of the previous multi controller joystick / quick control dial combination. More buttons have also been added to the body, allowing a greater number of controls to have a single function. For the first time in an EOS camera, the 60D includes a tilt-swivel LCD display which has a 3-inch diagonal, 3:2 aspect ratio, and 1.04 million dot resolution. The 60D's optical viewfinder now offers 96% coverage with 0.95x magnification. The EOS 60D also adds Creative Filter functions similar to those from the PowerShot compact cameras. The 60D ships from the end of September 2010 and priced at around $1,100 body-only, or $1,400 with a Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom kit lens. Here's the summary of a hands-on preview of the camera by PhotographyBLOG:

"The first thing that I noticed about the EOS 60D is the lovely noise that the shutter makes. All the menus are just as impressive as the EOS 50D when Canon rejuvenated it with brighter colours. The screen is a slightly higher resolution and images are easier to monitor on the back. Taking pictures with the Canon EOS 60D is simple, just like any other EOS at this level. The inclusion of the Best Shot dial makes it easy for beginners moving up from entry-level models who want the build and speed but not the complications of a pro model. In practice, the articulating screen is a great choice for Canon. It makes the 60D much more flexible in what it's capable of, and the fact that the screen is so big with such a high resolution sets a benchmark to Olympus, Nikon and Sony who also have rival models with rotating screens. The benefits are obvious with low and high-angle photography is made easier as well as self portraiture.

I like the new Canon EOS 60D, it has some interesting features, it's fast and is built to a high standard. If you're looking to get a 7D and are a few hundred pounds short, you may want to consider this because there's little difference between the two. Focusing is fast, metering is accurate and did I mention the sound of the shutter? I like the idea of the rotating screen (it's about time Canon started with that) and I even like the small ideas such as the locking dial. It's a great camera from Canon and is a perfect illustration that they're striving to perfect the photographic experience."

Canon EOS 60D Camera Reviews Roundup

PhotographyBay: "The Canon 60D, to me, is a great camera for the enthusiast.  Even though it loses a bit of the "pro" feel, as noted above, it still offers a lot for the experienced user to carry around as a casual camera.  This is particularly true for those who plan on using it for capturing HD video alongside still images.  And really, I wouldn't hesitate to do portraits or a wedding with the 60D and some..." - May 03 2011 More »

TechRadar: "With its similar 18Mp sensor, DIGIC 4 image processor and iFCL metering system (see below), you'd expect the 60D's image quality to be pretty much the same as from the cheaper 550D. Indeed, we tested the 60D throughout a range of lighting conditions and found the results to be all but indistinguishable. The only notable difference was that the 60D produced slightly smoother, less noisy images at high ISO settings, a..." - Mar 01 2011 More »
RegHardware: "I was surprised by the image quality of this camera, especially in light of the extra pixels squeezed onto the sensor. The picture results are outstanding for this class of camera, with rich colour reproduction, smooth tonal gradation and impressive low-light performance. The 60D has a native ISO range of between 100-6400, extendable to 12800. There is virtually no visible noise at all speeds up to 800 ISO. Fro..." - Feb 17 2011 More »
BJOP: "The 60D sensor output - from the quality of its AA filter through to processing - matches the 7D rather than the 550D. I found results a touch soft, even with three excellent lenses (17mm f/4 TS-E, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, and 100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro). The pixels of the Canon sensor are packed around 12 percent more densely in linear terms than a 16-megapixel Nikon sensor, and in pixels per square millimetre, the Canon..." - Feb 12 2011 More »

Canon 60D, carrie keiser - May 19 2013
Canon is a trusted name brand that I've been using for years. Love my new 60D, great upgrade from my rebel. Would recommend to everyone....

Love it!, heatherlynn620 - May 16 2013
I upgraded from the Canon T3, and am so happy I did. I was worried that for the price difference, I wouldn't notice as much of a quality difference as I expected, but you can definitely tell! The setup of the camera is slightly confusing, and takes a bit to get used to it and to figure out how to adjust the settings (or maybe I was used to my T3!), but it gets easier ove...

Great camera - but screen is way to sensitive!!, Gal - May 14 2013
It is not a review about the camera as a whole but more of a complaint. The camera, as a DSLR , is amazing. Quality is great and it's fast, intuitive, easy to use and loaded with features. My problem is I had a 40D for 6 years which didn't have an articulating screen and it barely had a scratch on the LCD. I had the 60D for two days and the screen, although high quality, is totally scra...

Great camera, Lars Tarsim - May 10 2013
Still on the cheaper, consumer-grade end of the spectrum, this is a wonderful camera. It has a bit of a pro-lookalike body. It has more features than the Rebel cameras, and the flip-out LCD is great....
