Canon 14.1MP PowerShot SX210 IS 14x Zoom Review by CNET With Rating 6.6/10

On February 8 2010, Canon have added four new PowerShot cameras to their lineup - the SX210 IS, SD3500 IS (aka IXUS 210 in Europe and IXY 10S in Japan), SD1400 IS (aka IXUS 130 in Europe and IXY 400F in Japan) and SD1300 IS (aka IXUS 105 in Europe and IXY 200F in Japan) models.

The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS features a 28mm wide-angle lens with 14x Optical Zoom and Optical Image Stabilization and 14.1-Megapixel resolution. It's the replacement for the PowerShot SX200 IS. Available in three bold color variations, black, purple and gold, additional features include a 3.0-inch wide LCD screen for improved visibility and glare reduction with enhanced Control Dial with Hints and Tips. For shooting video, the PowerShot SX210 IS has the ability to zoom optically, shoot in stereo sound and has Dynamic Mode Image Stabilization for improved image clarity. The PowerShot SX210 IS is currently selling at around $345. Here is the latest review of the camera by CNET UK, giving the camera a rating of 6.6 out of 10:

"The old PowerShot SX200 IS had 12.1 megapixels, but the SX210 has 14.1. The SX200 had a 12x zoom, while the SX210 has a 14x zoom. And just so there's no doubt that it's new, this camera's body has been restyled and some of the controls moved around. The pop-up flash is still, annoyingly, right where you want to put your left index finger when you hold the camera, but the mode dial's moved from the top to the back. The wide-screen LCD display is fine for shooting movies, but black bars will appear on the sides of the screen when you try shooting 4:3 ratio stills

You've also got to be a big wide-screen fan, because that's the aspect ratio of the 76mm (3-inch) LCD display on the back. It's fine if you spend much of your time shooting HD movies, but not so good if you're taking conventional 4:3 ratio stills, when you get thick black bars on either side and the display area effectively shrinks to about 62mm (2.4 inches). Apart from the annoying rotary controller, the SX210 works well enough, but there really is nothing special about it at all. In fact, its pictures are rather disappointing. The fine detail isn't particularly sharp, subtle textures like grass and distant trees tend to smooth over, and the lens loses definition towards the edges of the frame. The pictures are okay, but no more, and the jump to 14.1 megapixels certainly doesn't deliver the kind of improvements that the numbers might suggest -- quite the reverse in fact.

The PowerShot SX210 IS is an odd sort of camera. It sounds like it ought to be good, but it isn't particularly. It's big on numbers but short on innovation. It looks good, but doesn't feel especially well designed, and its pictures are very ordinary indeed. Styling aside, it just comes across as a cautious and predictable exercise in product development."

Canon Powershot SX210 IS Camera Reviews Roundup

DigitalReview: "We were quite pleased with the performance of the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS. The camera powers up responsively, and the comfortably positioned zoom lever makes framing images a simple step. In terms of capture speed, we were able to record a series of three images in a five second burst of shooting with the camera set to continuous advance mode, which falls within the stated SX210 IS specifications of 0.7 frames..." - Jul 17 2010 More »

Digital Camera Review: "There are plenty of reasons to justify spending an extra $20 on the PowerShotSX210 over the SX200. If you're shooting in great conditions, you won't have a problem snapping clean shots at the top end of the camera's generous 14x zoom range. The camera boasts eye-catching style, and build quality is as good as anything in its class. Operation is easy in auto mode and the two-tiered menu system is easy to navigat..." - Jun 29 2010 More »
MacWorld : "In the Macworld Lab's subjective still and video testing, the SX210 IS received an overall imaging score of Good. It had the most well-rounded images of any pocket megazoom camera in our test group, earning a Good rating for all four of our testing categories (exposure, color accuracy, sharpness, and lack of distortion). The SX210 IS also produced noticeably better video quality than any of the other pocket meg..." - Jun 17 2010 More »
PhotoReview Australia: "Not surprisingly, many performance aspects of the SX210 IS were similar to its predecessor. The AF and AE systems proved effective under most shooting conditions. For a contrast-based system, focusing was fast and accurate, even in very low light levels, thanks to the powerful AF-assist lamp. The camera also showed little tendency to hunt in dim lighting. Unfortunately, shots taken with the review camera were s..." - Jun 10 2010 More »

Tired, ~Kara Christy~ - May 05 2013
This camera makes me very tired. Yes it can take beautiful photos, but they are few and far between. In the meantime my camera and laptop are full of blurry, unfocused and dark pictures that are there to remind me of moments I didn't capture on film because this camera does not perform its main function very well, point and shoot. Worst of all is the shutter lag and I've owned many c...

I really enjoy this. Good zoom. Good picture quality. The only thing I can think of that would be considered negative would be that the flash is placed exactly where you want to put your finger. Other than that, everything is great....
