Sony DSC-W690 Camera Reviews Roundup

TechRadar: "These results show that images from the Sony Cyber-Shot W690 at lower ISO sensitivities show the same sort of signal to noise ratio as those from the Samsung PL210, Nikon Coolpix S6200 and Canon A4000. At mid-range sensitivities (between ISO 100 and ISO 400), the Sony camera performs better than all but the Nikon, before dipping at higher ISOs to the Samsung's level. The Sony Cyber-Shot W690's images perform better..." - Oct 03 2012 More »
CNET US: "Photo quality from the W690 is very good for its class, but like most compact cameras -- particularly those with CCD sensors -- it still stumbles at higher ISOs. Photos at ISO 80 and 100 are relatively sharp with a decent amount of fine detail and low noise. At ISO 200, subjects soften some, losing sharpness and fine detail. At ISO 400, images get noticeably softer and there's an increase in noise in darker areas of..." - Sep 29 2012 More »
ePhotoZine: "Detail is good throughout the images when shooting wide or with the full optical zoom, with the camera doing well at keeping purple fringing to a minimum. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 5cm, this allows the camera to get close enough to take a decent macro shot. A sharp noise free image is taken at ISO 80, with only a very slight hint of noise coming in at ISO 100. Images are still sharp at ISO 200 and..." - Aug 01 2012 More »
CNET UK: "I performed my tests using the W690's intelligent auto mode, allowing the camera to set all its own shooting parameters, while I concentrated on angle and composition. On first downloading the results and judging them as arbitray hits or misses, there was a higher proportion of misses than I have seen from other compacts over the last few months. Some shots exhibited over-exposed areas as it compensated for darker p..." - Aug 01 2012 More »

User Review of the camera - Sony DSC-W690

A true story about Sony support, or lack of?, TEXAS ROCKS!
Once upon a time, in a land far away lived a guy who loved Sony with all his heart. He felt like there was no reason to have anything else than Sony. So he went out and bought a TV (Sony), a DVD player (Sony), Camcorder (Sony), Game Console (Sony), MP3 Player (Sony), First, Second, and Third computers (Sony), First, Second and Third digital cameras (Sony), he even bought a new alarm clock (SONY). He told anyone who would listen "all you need is Sony, don't bother with other brands"
Then one day his Game Console had to update. It no longer supported other OS"s and it would only play a very small video format. It would not even play some videos from the same camera it did not to long ago. He had to format his Sony USB memory stick to work with his Sony Game Console, but that put a limit on the file sizes.
Then his Sony camcorder would not connect to his new Sony laptop. The Sony giant said sorry no drivers for you today.
Then one day he had a Sony laptop that was slow and clunky. Someone said it is Vista's fault Upgrade and you troubles will be gone. So he researched and checked with the Sony giant. Sony said sure update it is not an issue see here we have all the drivers you need. He was very happy and bought the upgrade. He applied the upgrade with ease. Everything seemed to be okay, but when trying to load the magnifier it said no way. He noticed that the video driver was bad, not good at all. He asked, looked, and poked around but no driver could be found. He joined a chat and said what about this driver? You said it was there, and I need this driver to see the computer. Sony said sorry no drivers for you today.
So one day he was fed up with all of this. He needed a new TV for his room. He went looking, many to choose. What should I do? I want to watch my videos, but with Sony the answer seems to be, there are no drivers for you today. So a nice man said bring in your other memory stick, not the Sony, try them all out and see what you like. So the next day he did. He walked in with his memory stick, not the Sony, and plugged it in to see which might work. He tried one that said USB, but it only was used to update the TV. Then he said lets try a Sony. But it would not play his videos, and he was tired of there are no drivers for you today. He walked over to a very nice TV. The screen was bright, yes it looked pretty nice. It read plays videos, pictures, and music. He thought, no way! He plugged in his memory stick, not the Sony, and it picked it up right away. It displayed the files in the same folder way of his memory stick, not the Sony. He was surprised because the Sony put the files in any order it wanted. He went in and tried to play his first video. Played with no issues, and a smile started to curl on his face. He said I will beat this TV, let me try a MKV. Played with no issues. He thought this cannot be. He stood there for at least an hour trying to find something, something this TV would not play.
Finally he gave up and said with a huge SMILE I want this TV! I want this TV today! The nice man said this is a really nice TV, have you ever had a SAMSUNG?
He said no, but I bet I will not need any drivers today.

This camera is useless to me.., Charlie
Functions way too slow for normal use.Takes 5 seconds for shutter to open when pressing the button and another 5 seconds to reload..

    Awesome Camera, TD
This is a terrific camera from sony. It has a lot of features and it is easy to comprehend. When it comes to space, it is good to have something like New 32gb Micro Sd Card Sdhc Tf Flash Memory Card 32gb Class 10, New! Usa!. Needless to say, this is a great camera from Sony.

    Top Notch, Cole Price
As always Sony manufactures superior cameras at a low price. I've always bought Sony electronics and this camera is the last in a long line of purchases that have never dissapointed.

What could be better?, Tom C
Bought this camera for my mostly technology illiterate wife and it has been worth every penny. Fits in her pocket, goes everywhere, takes great pictures with very little user input and she can do her own downloads. I couldn't have asked for more.

    horrible camera, Melissa Finley
this camera when you turned it on to the actual time to be able to use teh camera was counting 30 seconds. I was waiting to wait to take a photo! I would never use this camera and sent it back after 2 days of having it! Never buy this version!

    camera, Tammy Groom "horselover"
I had another sony cyber shot but I was taking a picture of one of my horses and another one came up behind me and broke it. so I picked this one., it is awesome. it has the instruction built in the camera. that is a very good thing for you do not have to carry a instruction book with you. still trying to figure out how to work the instructions though. that would be the only downfall to this camera.

    Gift Purchase, martie bell
This camera was for a birthday gift and for the price it was everything expected or wanted. Sony makes great products so I knew we probably couldn't go wrong but this worked out even better for all.
Thanks for the great prices and shipping went off without a hitch too.

This camera will not disappoint, redwatts "Richard"
I had had one of these cyber-shot for years and then I accidentally damaged it (not the camera's fault). I wanted to be able to use the card and battery so I bought another one but this one is even better. I have a 8 Gig card and it holds 1100 pictures I think that is medium resolution. This camera has lots of options but it is simple to operate, you don't have to read a 80 page manual to take pictures. it has good battery life but I do recommend a 2nd battery.

    Nice camera, Alexander Molina
Love it!!! Easy to use, so far a great product for the money, so I recommend it. Nice brand too.

    A very good option, Diego
I'm not an expert, so, I don't understand the technical, but this camera is "very intelligent" and super easy to use it.

Good camera for amateurs, Teresa White
I wanted a camera for my mom who's in her 70's. She needed something easy to understand and use that also takes good pictures. This is a great little camera, just what she needed. I also bought one for myself since it's so portable and easy to use. It takes great pictures (I use it at my son's sporting events).

Good Camera but would be better if heavier., Eugene Curley
This camera has a lot of good features and I haven't used all of them as yet but the only problem we have is for older people, it is very light and hard to hold still when clicking the picture
  • 2013-04-28 07:00
Bad pictures Bad product., Phillip W. Trimbath
I had a comparable Nikon that unfortunately went for a swim. I bought this thinking "sony, how bad can it be?"Pretty bad. Under any lighting it takes really inferior pictures, and the battery that comes with it lasts about an hour and it's done. Then you have to remove it and place it in a docking station. Very inconvenient.
Bottom line, it's a poor product compared to comparably priced models from Canon or Nikon.

    Sharp clear outdoor pictures!, Dunncorrado
I take modeling pictures of my daughter and I started off with this camera. This is a great little camera that provides sharp clear pictures. Although, it's down fall is indoor pictures. This, camera is not suitable for indoor pictures. The lightning in a house doesn't give enough light. The pictures will come out dark and blurry. If you are looking for a good outdoor camera then this is it. Also, action shots are good with this camera because you can manually set it to what you need. I have shot my son jumping onto a tree trunk and bouncing off...clear, crisp photo. Add a little editing and you have a photo that looks pro.

    Sony, jkh
Works great and easy to figure out, priced reasonably.
My only issue is the complete manual had to be downloaded from the internet, I hate that they do not supply a complete manual.

This one replaced an older model I dropped., Doreatha
We just purchased a 50X optical zoom by Cannon for our vacation photos outside which is big and bulky but needed a pocket camera when we don't want to carry or need something with such a high optical zoom. Having purchased Sony products in the past, this upgrade is proving to be a great camera for the price. So far we love it.
