Samsung ST93 16.1 Megapixel Ultra Compact Reviews Roundup

Samsung today announces the ST93 compact camera, replacing the existing ST90 model. The 16 Megapixels CCD-based camera offers a 5x optical zoom lens starting at a useful 26mm to 130mm equivalent. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.3 to f/5.9, across the zoom range.

The Samsung ST93 includes what the company calls "Dual IS", a two-pronged approach to fighting blur from camera shake, consisting of optical image stabilization, and digital techniques that likely work by raising ISO sensitivity and/or performing deblurring. The Samsung ST93 also features 720p HD video recording, a Panorama mode, the company's latest Smart filters (Vignetting, miniature, half-tone dot, palette, and a new soft focus effect) and Magic Frame templates (Wall Art, Retro Film, Ripple, Full Moon, Retro Record, and Classic TV). The ST93 will cost óG129.99 in the UK and be available in June. It is currently not been announced in the US.

"While overall quality of the images captured by the Samsung ST93 is decent, they're not always as sharp and as crisp as we'd like to see. They do have a good range of well represented colours, but when viewed at 100% some of the images are blurry and soft. Both the auto and program modes seem to suffer occasionally from blurring and darkness, which using th..." More »

We got some lovely pictures from it despite the terrible UK winter weather we had while the test was underway. Colours are rendered realistically without too much saturation and we like the fun effects that the camera ha..." More »

"To get the best results you really need well-lit surroundings. It had a tendency to demand the flash in what we would consider fairly bright situations where the flash would have little effect anyway because the framing encompassed so large an area. When we manually suppressed it, the ST93 responded by dialling up its sensitivity, as we would expect, but wi..." More »

"Although stronger in the centre, detail is good throughout the images, whether shooting wide or with the full optical zoom. Images have excellent colour reproduction and are well exposed. The lens has a minimum focusing distance 5cm meaning you can get close enough to take a decent macro shot. Images at ISO 80 and ISO 100 are sharp and free of noise but the..." More »
