Just to compare the recently announced 8GB Compact Vault from Sony. This Seagate 8GB CompactFlash harddrive is currently on sales at Amazon and it’s priced at $150.09. Also to compare this with the Sandisk ULTRA II High Performance 8.0 GB CF Card, which is priced at $351.49 with speed of 9MB/s. The Lexar Media 8GB Professional Series 40X CompactFlash Card is more expensive, which is priced at $797.99 with 40x speed of 6MB/s at Amazon.com.

I’ve had nothing but problems with that drive, unfortunately. I purchased two of them for use with my Canon EOS 10D. After shooting about 200 images (in RAW format), the camera refuses to either read from or write to the drive. It doesn’t display an error code. Instead, the camera resets. Note that it does recognize the drive and correctly displays the number of images remaining.
Other things to be aware of with this drive are the access times and the battery life. Access times are considerably slower than with a standard Compact Flash Type I card. I would frequently fill the buffer in my camera and sit there for several minutes waiting for the buffer to flush. Battery life is cut to almost 1/3 of normal use. (I always carry three batteries, so that’s not as big an issue, but the access time is a problem, especially when shooting wildlife.)
For now, I’d recomend sticking with the non-harddrive versions of Compact Flash even though it means carrying more cards.
