Bob Atkins at photo.net reviewed the new Canon 30D camera. His conclusion is :
“My take on the Canon 30D is that it represents a significant and worthwhile upgrade of the 20D. It adds a larger and more legible LCD with an increased viewing angle. It adds spot metering, ISO display in the viewfinder, RGB histograms, things many people had been asking for. It provides a larger image buffer, more shots per battery charge and an optional 3fps “slow” shooting speed. In addition it adds the Picture Style modes from the 5D and 1D MKII N and a number of improvements in image management (9999 images per folder for example). On top of all this, the “list” price has been lowered by $200 and the initial street price looks like it will be at least $100 lower than that at which the EOS 20D started selling.
It’s true that the EOS 30D isn’t a massive technological leap, and we’ve maybe come to expect that with each new Canon DSLR, but it’s a solid improvement of what was already a very good camera.
I don’t think there is currently a better camera for the price. While 20D owners may not be dumping their cameras in droves and upgrading to the Canon 30D, I think a lot of first time buyers and those upgrading from the Digital Rebel series or earlier DSLRS like the 10D or D60 will find the 30D an excellent choice. The 20D owners can now probably afford that 17-85IS or 10-22 wideangle zoom they have been lusting after if they decide not to trade up to a 30D!”
